Astronaut Shares Emotional Distress After ‘Tsunami of Harassment Following Journey

A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her battle with depression after facing a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

The 34-year-old activist – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission in April, which also featured celebrity crewmates.

The mission was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction overshadowed her achievement under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a public message, referring to a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the period after the landing.

She portrayed the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she wrote. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

The researcher, who has focused her career on gynecological science and performed experiments during the mission, said every professional achievement – from her studies and astronaut training to the historic significance of her background – was buried under the deluge of gendered attacks.

She is best known for her groundbreaking advocacy protecting the rights of survivors of assault.

Her own goal of reaching space was paused after an attack during her time as a student, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

Finding Solid Ground

Now, eight months after achieving her goal, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she thanked the followers whose support helped save her. “Your support rescued me,” she said.

She concluded that despite the negativity, significant positive outcomes had come out of the mission, including spotlight on her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.

The self-operating New Shepard rocket lifted off from Texas in the spring, carrying the all-female team on a short trip that passed the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.
