Blues Manager Maresca Dismisses Man City Speculation as Pure Rumour

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has branded recent talk linking him with a move to Manchester City as "100% speculation".

The Italian manager, who previously worked as Pep Guardiola's right-hand man in Manchester, responded to the persistent rumours surrounding his next move.

Maresca, named Chelsea boss in June 2024, has a contract running through the end of the decade, with a possible extra year available.

"It doesn't affect me at all because I know that is 100% speculation," Maresca said. "And at this moment, there is little room for such distractions."

He went on to explain, Primarily, because I have a contract here for several more years. And my attention, I have stated many times, is solely on this club and I'm very proud to be here. But again, it's speculation. One week ago I was connected to Juventus in Italy. So I ignore it because I know that is without foundation."

Chelsea, presently placed fourth in the Premier League, are scheduled to face Newcastle United this Saturday in a 12:30 GMT fixture.

Strain Following Previous Comments

Maresca's most recent comments follow in the wake of he described a recent two-day spell as his most difficult since joining Chelsea.

Those initial words had sparked widespread speculation of a possible disagreement between the manager and the club's ownership hierarchy.

When asked if he had since spoken with the club's leadership, Maresca responded, "We are in the same building, so we talk about different things. But about the Everton media session, no."

The Italian however affirmed he would definitely stay at the club next season and urged the fans to "continue to support the team".

In more positive news, Maresca revealed that sidelined forwards Liam Delap and Estevao Willian could be back ahead of schedule, possibly in contention for a fixture against Aston Villa on 27 December.

Perspective: An 'Open Wound'

The perceived disconnect between Maresca and the club's hierarchy persists as an unhealed issue that continues to create unease.

While there has been no further escalation of the matter publicly, there has equally been no resolution forthcoming, leaving the matter unresolved.

The atmosphere during the manager's media briefings has become increasingly awkward, raising fears it could undermine what has up to now been a promising beginning to the campaign.

Chelsea's on-field situation is strong: they are in the top four in the Premier League, have reached the Carabao Cup last four, and can achieve a better Champions League position with strong results in their remaining games.

The lingering question is whether this behind-the-scenes situation might begin to affect a squad that was just starting to appear settled.
