Condemnation Surges as Trump's Post on Rob Reiner Spurs Widespread Rebuke
Figures from across the political aisle and the Hollywood industry are uniting to condemn Donald Trump for his statements following the shocking deaths of renowned filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
An Inflammatory Social Media Post
Following the discovery of the couple deceased at their Los Angeles residence, Trump took to social media to describe the deceased director as "anguished and suffering". In a message, he claimed Reiner's death was "because of the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and untreatable affliction with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
His comments quickly shifted to praising his own achievements, juxtaposing Reiner's alleged "intense obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump called the "unprecedented era of America".
Law Enforcement Update and Arrest
Police have since announced the arrest of the couple's adult son, Nick, on charges related to murder in connection with the case. Reports indicate his bond was set at a substantial sum.
A Wave of Condemnation from Celebrities and Politicians
The reaction to Trump's words was swift and harsh.
“What a disgusting and despicable statement,” remarked actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a close acquaintance, similarly condemned the statements. She pointed to prior rhetoric from Trump about the killing of an activist, asking, "Do you have no shame? Can you get any worse?"
The state of California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, simply stated, "This is a disturbed man."
Mirroring this view, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "He is a despicable piece of trash."
Senator Chris Murphy commented, "He's just lost it. Now saying the Reiners caused their own demise because they opposed him. So sick."
Rebuke from Within Political Ranks
Some Republican lawmakers also expressed disapproval.
Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the situation was "a personal tragedy, not about politics or political enemies". She also mentioned struggles with substance abuse and psychological well-being some families face.
Fellow GOP congressman, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's remarks "unacceptable and disrespectful" considering the nature of the deaths. He openly challenged others in his political party to defend the comments.
Reiner's Legacy and Stance on Trump
Rob Reiner was long a vocal detractor of Donald Trump. During a previous conversation, he argued Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the office. He had also cautioned about the risks of autocracy should Trump be reelected to power.
"There is authoritarianism making its move around the world," Reiner said. "Should the United States crumble, there’s a risk that democratic systems crumble around the world."
Despite his strong opposition, Reiner had in the past shown "complete revulsion" and denounced political violence unequivocally after the killing of another individual.
A Notable Link: The Art of the Deal
Providing a layer of past connection, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the artist who captured the photograph for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had once recounted the story of the photo shoot, mentioning Trump's request for "special hairspray" as being photographed on a high-rise with a view of Central Park.
