Democratic lawmakers Denounce Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Execution
Democratic officials voiced fury after the ex-president charged a coalition of Democratic representatives of being "betrayers" and declared they should be detained and penalized "with execution" following their release of a controversial video.
The Recording That Provoked the Debate
The recorded message, shared on earlier this week, showcases six Democratic congress members who previously acted in armed forces or security roles.
"Similar to us, you all took an oath to defend and defend this founding document," the lawmakers declared in the brief video. "And right now, the threats to our democratic foundation are not only from foreign nations, but from within our own country. Our laws are explicit, you can decline illegal orders, you can refuse improper directives, you have to reject unlawful commands. No one has to carry out directives that violate the law or our founding principles."
Trump's Incensed Reply
The recorded statement seemed to provoke a heated reply from the ex-president.
On the following morning, Trump wrote on his preferred platform: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In another message, he wrote: "This is really concerning, and Dangerous to our Country. Their comments cannot be permitted to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent message, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also reposted a comment that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Party Representatives Answer
Following Trump's remarks on Thursday, Top Democrats issued a unified statement censuring the statements.
"Partisan aggression has no role in this nation," they stated. "Representatives who participated in the video all acted our country with exceptional patriotism and excellence. We strongly denounce Donald Trump's appalling and harmful death threats against members of Congress, and appeal to Republican lawmakers to strongly do the same."
The party representatives also mentioned that they had been in communication with law enforcement "to make certain the security of these officials and their relatives."
"Donald Trump must without delay remove these extreme digital publications and recant his violent rhetoric before he gets someone killed," the announcement added.
Lawmakers' Strong Reaction
The officials who were featured in the video also issued a statement.
"We identify as ex-military personnel and national security professionals who care for this country and made an vow to defend and uphold the founding document of the United States," they said. "That oath is permanent, and we intend to keep it. No intimidation, intimidation, or call for violence will prevent us from that fundamental duty."
"The significant point is that the ex-president considers it liable to punishment by death for us to repeat the statutes," they added. "Armed forces members should recognize that we have their support as they carry out their oath to the national charter and obligation to follow only proper directives. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our duty."
They added: "All citizens must unite and denounce the ex-president's requests for our execution and political violence. This is a moment for moral clarity."
More Political Comments
The Democratic Senate minority leader also censured Trump's statements and shared on digital platforms: "Let's be crystal clear: the President of the United States is calling for the execution of elected officials."
He continued: "This constitutes an direct THREAT. All senators, each house member, all citizens – regardless of party – should denounce this immediately and unconditionally."
The Conservative official justified Trump's assertion that the Democrats had engaged in "treason", describing the video as "highly unsuitable", commenting: "It is very dangerous, you have important representatives of the government telling military personnel to ignore directives, I think that's without precedent in American history."
The GOP official also reportedly told the press that in what he reviewed of Trump's publications, Trump was "explaining the violation of rebellion" but that "lawyers have to analyze the language and decide all that."
Executive Branch Reaction
During a White House press conference on Thursday afternoon, when asked by a reporter, "Does the president want to put to death members of Congress?", the administration spokesperson answered: "Certainly not."
"We should understand about what the president is reacting to," the official declared. "We see sitting members of the US Congress who coordinated to arrange a recorded statement to members of the US military, to serving soldiers urging them to ignore the president's lawful orders."
She added: "The purity of our armed forces relies on the chain of command, and if that system is compromised, it can result in casualties, it can cause chaos, and that is exactly what these congressional representatives ... are fundamentally supporting."
