Federal Reserve Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The United States monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release reads. “Price increases has risen and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The number of jobs created to the economy in August was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was set to publish September’s employment data in early October, it suspended its release when the closure began. Private payroll firm ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in September, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said recently, a trend he had previously said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Shows Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
