Jailhouse Shock: Brazil's Ex-President Jair Bolsonaro Faces Life Behind Bars

He battled the law and the legal system prevailed.

A couple of months subsequent to getting a twenty-seven-year sentence for seeking to “eradicate” Brazil’s democracy, one-time leader Jair Bolsonaro at last looks destined for incarceration.

Expected Jailing

The found-guilty plotter – who's been subject to home confinement in his residence while a series of judicial steps and challenges unfold – is largely predicted to be imprisoned in the near future, amidst mounting talk that he will be moved to a notorious top-security prison.

Previous Statements on Convicts

Over Bolsonaro’s long public life, the right-wing former military man showed minimal mercy for Brazil’s inmates.

“For what reason must we give those lowlifes a comfortable existence?” he previously wondered. “They ought to simply be screwed, full-fucking-stop. That’s what I reckon.”

At another time, Bolsonaro proclaimed: “Unless you desire to wind up there, the only thing required is not rape, kidnap or rob.”

Prison Destination Speculation

Yet the idea of Bolsonaro himself ending up in the Papuda prison top-security prison in Brasília has shocked backers, four of whom this week visited the prison in an seeming attempt to discourage the judiciary from sending him there.

Senator Lucas, a politician from Bolsonaro’s allied group who was among that group, claimed he predicted the 70-year-old figure to be imprisoned in the coming fortnight and feared his destination could be Papuda.

He asserted Bolsonaro’s serious gut issues – the result of a almost deadly stabbing during the 2018 presidential political campaign – implied it would be risky to keep the ex-leader there. “His [health] situation is very grave. He won’t be able to cope if they send him to Papuda … It could be terrible,” he added, who also expressed concern about cramped cells and the condition of jail cuisine.

During his tour Papuda, Lucas recalled seeing cells containing four dozen prisoners: “That’s practically one square metre per prisoner.

“We spoke to the convicts and they complain, of course, of the awful food,” remarked the senator.

Allies Speak Out

He is not the lone figure expressing views ahead of the former president’s expected incarceration.

Penning in a prominent publication, a different supporter, the former cabinet member Fábio Wajngarten, bemoaned the “harsh” end to Bolsonaro’s “impeccable” political career and alleged Brazil was about to witness “the largest political injustice in its history”.

“This is an injustice that gnaws the souls of millions people in Brazil,” Wajngarten wrote.

Divided General Reaction

That may be true given the considerable backing Bolsonaro retains on the conservative side. Yet his predicted incarceration has also pleased the spirits of numerous others who think he should be jailed for conspiring to block the incoming president from becoming president – and even conspiring to have him murdered.

Congressman Otoni, a representative for the current leader's political party, stated: “Not a soul wishes Bolsonaro to be put in a hole. No one wants Bolsonaro to be put in segregation. Nobody wishes Bolsonaro to lack food or for him to have to lie on concrete. We wish him to receive proper treatment – but respectful handling behind bars. He must not carry on being his personal jailer for his lifetime.”

Otoni was struck by how Bolsonaro allies, who have for a long time celebrating the harsh conditions of convicts, had abruptly woken up to their entitlements. “Only now has the extreme right – which has consistently argued that basic rights were not for lawbreakers – decided to inspect a penitentiary to discover what conditions are truly like,” he said.

“Bolsonaro is a criminal,” Otoni insisted, but that did not mean he merited “shameful, demeaning conduct”.

Likely Prison Conditions

Regardless of rumors that Bolsonaro could be sent to Papuda, which currently holds about fourteen thousand prisoners, his expected assigned facility looks to be a close penitentiary for law enforcement and other “special” inmates referred to as Papudinha (Small Papuda).

His potential cell are far more comfortable than those in the main prison, although nevertheless a world away from the luxury Bolsonaro had while residing in the stunning official residence, approximately 12 miles away.

Based on information, the cell Bolsonaro could expect to inhabit in Papudinha measures about 24 square meters – about the area of two parking spaces – and features a 12 sq metre WC with a bathing area and a 12 sq metre balcony. “The ex-president might be allowed to have a set and also a cooler in his room as long as they were provided by his loved ones,” the report stated.

Partisan Comments

He denounced the talked-about idea to send the one-time head of state to Papuda as “a type of retaliation” on the part of the supreme court judge who led Bolsonaro’s proceedings and will decide his fate in the {
