Norrie Hails 'Biggest Triumph' Following Roaring Back to Defeat Carlos Alcaraz in Paris
Cameron Norrie earned the biggest win of his career by rallying from a lost first set to beat world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz in three hard-fought sets in the second round of the prestigious indoor tournament.
Although he had before defeated Alcaraz on two prior meetings, this victory signifies Norrie's initial success over a sitting world top-ranked player.
"Huge. So big for me," said Norrie, who becomes the fifth UK male player in the record books to overcome a world No 1. "Bouncing back from a physical setback last year, I lost in the first round of qualifiers here. I just aimed to appreciate my tennis in the closing months of the year. To secure a win like this, it's the most significant success of my career, my first win over the global number one and likely the most confident competitor in the tennis scene right now."
Norrie, ranked 31st globally, also stopped Alcaraz's supreme streak of nine straight final appearances and 17 consecutive elite tournament successes, which was the best series of outcomes in the Spanish star's young career.
Match Breakdown
Alcaraz appeared to be moving confidently to success at the start as he cruised past the first set. Yet, Norrie steadily battled back into the match by executing with greater precision and engaging the Spanish opponent into extended, physical points. His relentless steadiness and reliability slowly took its toll.
For much of the battle, Alcaraz served well but he found it challenging to find his timing off his groundstrokes. The rising talent seemed notably uncomfortable striking his primary weapon, which has been the most effective stroke in the game for a large part of this year, haemorrhaging 29 forehand unforced errors and a overall of 54 unforced errors. On the other side, Norrie offered his opponent minimal unforced errors, maintaining his consistency, athleticism and power throughout while delivering effective serves and choosing his moments to force himself forward and play aggressively.

Alcaraz, in spite of his incredible achievements, is yet to figure out how to display his best tennis on indoor courts.
