A popular South African media personality and entertainer has been shot dead in the country's largest city Johannesburg, sending shockwaves across a country battling rampant crime.

Warrick Stock, popularly known as DJ Warras, was shot and killed in the city centre on Tuesday afternoon.

Police said the forty-year-old presenter was confronted by three individuals, one of whom began shooting at him before fleeing on foot.

The motive of the incident remains unclear and no suspects have been apprehended have taken place, according to authorities.

How It Happened

Law enforcement revealed that Stock was targeted as he was exiting a premises in the vicinity of the Carlton Centre.

He had been present for hours at the building overseeing the setup of security systems, which had been controversially occupied by squatters, as per local media.

"Authorities believe the deceased was confronted by three unknown suspects after he parked his car, and they began shooting at him before fleeing the scene on foot," a police statement confirmed.

CCTV footage showed a suspect with dreadlocks and clad in what appeared to be a protective services outfit shooting on Stock before fleeing.

The DJ tried to run away after he was hit but fell down across the street.

Officials noted that Stock had an gun that was not fired and it was not a robbery during the incident.

Important clues, like cartridges, were recovered from the location.

Authorities have requested members of the public who may have seen the suspects to assist with the investigation.

"Evidence suggests they traveled on foot after the shooting, and police have been attempting to locate them to determine their destination," remarked an authority figure.

His sister, Nicole Stock, stated the relatives are devastated to process his death.

"I am in shock. I don't have words," were her words.

She urged the citizens to refrain from sharing disturbing footage from the scene, saying this was an incredibly difficult time, particularly for Stock's three sons.

A cabinet official commented he was angry and saddened by Stock's murder.

"He spoke his truth without fear or favour. He even criticized me and my policies as a public official. He was a shining model of who we ought to be," the minister added.

A party figurehead said the "brazen murder of DJ Warras in broad daylight is a tragedy for all South Africans".

A broadcasting director expressed that "Stock was far beyond a face of a reality series. He was a talented storyteller, a dedicated enthusiast of music and a generous spirit who brought joy and energy to every appearance. His dedication to creativity left an indefinable mark."

In a release, the network he worked for affirmed Stock was known for his charisma, warmth and sharp wit, adding that his legacy "will live on".
