For much of the fifth and final season of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield find themselves trapped within a psychic prison built from the memories of Vecna. Their quest for a way out in the pivotal sixth episode leads them to experience a defining event from Henry's youth—an event that could contain the secret to his downfall permanently.

The Discovery in the Tunnel

Upon meeting Max in the psychic realm known as Camazotz, Max reveals she is taking refuge in a chamber that Henry avoids at all costs. An accidental discovery a spyglass taken from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the danger lies outside of the cave. By aligning her view with the shape, she and Max suddenly fall into a abandoned tunnel.

There, they witness a child version of Henry find an injured and paranoid man. As the boy offers aid, the man fires a gun, striking Henry in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly asks tearfully. It was a factor, but the trauma wasn't just a defensive killing.

A Naval Mystery and Stolen Research

This backstory explains the 1943 event, which reportedly teleported a warship into a plane later called the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the sole survivor was the captain, who emerged in a unresponsive state with an different blood composition.

That survivor's offspring, a young Martin Brenner, attempted to recreate this experiment in the Nevada desert. One of his scientists stole research materials to give to the Russian agents, who were desperate to launch their version of the tests. That traitor in the mine shaft is the one who stole the materials.

So, What's in the Case?

Given what is revealed about the doctor's experiments, the case almost certainly contained some of the unique blood type. As shown, Henry is already bleeding. He likely becomes contaminated upon opening the case, leading to the awakening of his powers—powers he would genetically impart to the children under Brenner's care.

Alternatively, the container could have held exotic matter that was destined to travel to Hawkins Laboratory, where it helps stabilize the mirror dimension. The prequel shows that young Henry ended up in the Abyss, reappearing after half a day with a new blood type and personality. As a youth, he fights the whispers of a sinister presence, reminiscent of how Will was controlled by the shadow monster in the past.

A Weaponized Emotion

Henry's enduring terror associated with the mine shows how profoundly traumatic the event was for him. While he orchestrates the Hive Mind and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy remains. Fear is his tool, and the show is setting up a showdown between him and Will, who has deliberately faced his own deepest fears to become stronger.

This journey has taken a weapon from Vecna. More importantly, Will now knows what Vecna himself fears, potentially giving him a decisive edge in the series finale to come.
