The New Mayor Pledges a 'Fresh Chapter' for NYC in First Address
On his initial day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reimagine” the metropolis, promising “a new era” and an audacious start to his tenure.
A Groundbreaking Mayor
The new democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

An Ambitious Platform
Mamdani now begins one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a plan promising:

- No-cost bus transit
- A cap on rents for approximately 1 million households

The projected $10 billion cost of these services may pose a hurdle to finance. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the richest residents and corporations. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

The new mayor will deal with skepticism from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past comments regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide resigned over offensive past social media posts.
Mamdani has moved to address these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.
On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was described as unexpectedly friendly.

Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their ability in delivering city upkeep: sanitation, curbing the rodent problem, fixing roadways, and making sure reliable subway operation.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's public safety record, citing historically low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with murders reported.
As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani ended his speech with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
