The Reason Real Madrid Have 'Complete Confidence' in Youngster Thiago Pitarch
When an 18-year-old creates club a historic moment in a pivotal European match against Manchester City, it naturally attracts praise and attention.
In only his maiden start in the competition - and fifth game for the team - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the fifteen-time Champions League winners claimed a 3-0 last-16 first leg advantage at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The teenager, who also made his club debut in the play-off round a few weeks prior with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then assisted Los Blancos overcome the English Premier League side in the midweek second leg to confirm a quarter-final place.
At 18 years and 226 days, Pitarch became the club's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League's latter rounds, surpassing star Vinicius Jr's record by 10 days.
A Meteoric Rise From The Academy
The midfielder is the latest to emerge from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting protegees.
He signed for Madrid from Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe's academies, and initially featuring for the Juvenil C team, where he quickly made a strong impression.
He worked his way up to the reserve side and it was in a friendly match in which they faced the academy's first team, then coached by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have drawn the eye of the present manager, who took over from Xabi Alonso in January.
Reports would later describe the moment as "an instant connection," noting Pitarch stood out not only for his technical ability, but for the vitality, personality and determination he brought to the team.
'His Greatest Quality Is His Character'
In the summer of 2025, former boss Alonso invited the youngster to practice with the senior squad and awarded him minutes in the warm-up matches.
Yet, it was the change in manager that proved the defining moment in his career as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in each leg against the Portuguese side that led to the clash with Pep Guardiola's team.
"I have dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the very first time I started playing the game, every day you go to train and each day you play a match," stated Pitarch following his debut.
"I have just achieved my dream with the best team in the world and in the best competition."
Handed a first start in La Liga against his former club - where he was for several seasons after moving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his place for the following four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos created an opportunity.
The teenager has seized it with performances that have belied his youth and experience.
"He is a very quick player, and you can observe his capabilities," said Arbeloa. "He's incredibly energetic, with excellent endurance, work-rate and mobility."
The player's mindset has also impressed his coach.
"His greatest quality is his personality," added Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the ball, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.
"I understand people are surprised to watch him start in a Champions League match, but he is selected because I had total trust in him to do his normal game.
"Thiago will keep receiving opportunities with the main squad. It is delightful to coach a player like him."

His situation mirrors that of other bi-national players such as club colleague Diaz and Barca star Yamal. Whereas teenage Lamine opted for Spain, Brahim opted to play for Morocco.
Eyes on the Prize
At present, his attention is on establishing himself in the Real side and repaying his manager's belief.
He featured for 74 minutes in the 2-1 victory at the Etihad, which completed a 5-1 overall triumph and a last-eight matchup with Bayern Munich.
He was replaced by fellow youth graduate in Angel underscored the coach's confidence in the next generation to help the team pursue trophies to come.
Following his notable contributions to date on European football's biggest stage, Pitarch is expected to play a key role in that.
"Arbeloa handles me the identical way. We handle it very naturally. I attempt not to think about it too much - I have to deserve my minutes on the pitch," he said following the success at Etihad Stadium.
