In a significant military action, Kyiv's forces have employed British-made Storm Shadow missiles to target and hit a major Russian oil processing facility. This strike occurred on Thursday, according to the Ukrainian military authorities.
Details of the Strike and Military Significance
The targeted facility, the Novoshakhtinsk oil plant, was reportedly hit, with multiple blasts recorded at the site. This marks another instance where Ukraine has utilized these powerful British-supplied missiles against objectives on Russian soil.
Military spokespersons noted that the Novoshakhtinsk facility acts as one of the primary providers of fuel products in southern Russia and is actively engaged in providing for the military of the Russian Federation.
Political Discussions on the Conflict
Separately, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on Thursday that he held productive discussions with envoys of former US President Donald Trump, including Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. These talks focused on possible ways to end the war.
“We had a very productive conversation: many details, good ideas, that we discussed,” Zelenskyy stated on a messaging platform. “There are some fresh concepts on how to bring a genuine peace closer, and it involves approaches, potential summits, and, certainly, the timeline.”
Legal Crackdown Within Russia
In a parallel internal matter, a court in Russia has found guilty a pro-war activist and opponent of Vladimir Putin on charges of supporting terrorist activities. Sergei Udaltsov, leader of the opposition movement, was given to six years in prison.
The charges reportedly stem from an online post Udaltsov published backing another group of activists accused of forming a terrorist group. Udaltsov has rejected the allegations as politically motivated and, following the verdict, stated his intention to begin a hunger strike in protest.
International Detainee Case
The Kremlin has stated it is in contact with French officials regarding the case of Laurent Vinatier, a French researcher currently serving a three-year sentence in Russia and reportedly facing additional accusations of espionage.
A spokesperson said that Russia has made an offer to France in the case of Vinatier, and now “it is in France’s court.” President Emmanuel Macron’s office stated he is closely following the situation, with all state resources mobilised to provide consular support and advocate for his liberation as soon as possible.
Symbolic Reconstruction in Occupied City
The Mariupol Drama Theatre, which was destroyed in a devastating bombardment while hundreds of civilians sought refuge in its basement, is set to reopen. Authorities in control have heralded the rebuilding as a sign of renewal.
Conversely, previous staff from the theatre have denounced the planned opening as “a macabre spectacle.” This project is part of a wider Kremlin effort to showcase its administration in seized territories, a process accompanied by the arrest or exile of dissenting voices and property seizures from Ukrainian citizens.
The theatre is expected to open by the end of the month with a performance of a Russian fairytale, having been rebuilt almost from scratch over the last 24 months.
