Seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has secured a wild-card entry for the Australian Open, commencing on the 18th of January in Melbourne.

Historic Return to the Australian Courts

The event organizers announced on Friday that the forty-five-year-old icon will make a return at Melbourne Park a remarkable 28 years after her debut. During 1998, she overcame her younger sister Serena in the second round before exiting in the quarter-finals to fellow American Lindsay Davenport.

Gearing Up for the Summer Swing

The tennis star had previously revealed in the month of November her plans to compete in Auckland, New Zealand, where she also received a special entry, two weeks prior to the Melbourne event. Organizers added that Williams is also entered to participate in Australia's Hobart International a following week, immediately prior to the start of play at the main venue.

Her last appearance in the city was in the year 2021, and she has finished runner-up in the singles competition on two occasions, losing to Serena in the finals of 2003 as well as 2017.

"I’m excited to be back in the country and eagerly anticipating playing during the Australian summer," Venus stated. "I have experienced so many incredible memories there, and I’m thankful for the chance to go back to a venue that has been so significant to my professional journey."

Williams' overall record at Melbourne Park stands at an impressive 54 victories and 21 losses. This year will mark the twenty-second occasion she has appeared in the main draw.

Establishing a Fresh Benchmark

The tournament pointed out that Williams is poised to be the oldest woman to take part in an Open's singles competition, eclipsing the record previously held by Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was forty-four when she was defeated in the opening round at Melbourne Park in 2015.
